About Delhi

Delhi, the capital city of India has a rich history and a vibrant present that typify the soul of the country. It has witnessed the rise and fall of several empires. It is believed to be Indraprastha, the capital of Pandavas around 1200 BC. The city displays a curious blend of Mughal monuments, modern sky scrappers, beautiful gardens, wide tree lined avenues.

The airport is located 20km south of Delhi.

Delhi Airport
Indira Gandhi International Airport connects Delhi with rest of the world. It is a major gateway to India. It is equipped with state-of-the-art category - IIIA landing system making it operational even during dense foggy weather. It currently handles 13100 domestic and 9500 International passengers daily.

Through the International Terminal (Terminal II) 35 airlines fly to major cities in the world.

The Domestic Airport has three terminals, i.e. Terminal 1A & Terminal 1B and Domestic Arrival terminal. Terminal 1A caters to domestic flights of the national Indian Airlines and its subsidiary, Alliance Air. Flights of other scheduled private airlines viz. Jet Airways and Air Sahara operate from terminal 1B, along with other executive aircrafts/private aviation activities. The distance between the two terminals is eight kilometers.

Indira Gandhi International Airport is stated to be privatized by a Joint Venture, as part of Government's plan to provide world class terminals and facilities to the passengers.

Shopping Places

For shopping branded products upmarket arcades such as Ansal Plaza, South Extension and Greater Kailash markets and Santushti are the best places. Dilli Haat is famous for Indian handicrafts and regional food stalls. Besides, Indian Handicraft Emporium near Qutub is a popular address for traditional Indian handicrafts. Hauz Khas Village is the one-stop place for browsing though art and designwear.

Nightlife

Delhi nightlife had transformed greatly over the recent years. So many lounge and dance bars have come up in Delhi and going popular amongst the people. Low seating and ambient are the major phenomena in delhi night life. The most happening night life spots are:

Places of Interest

Booming urban culture amidst a grand past witnessed several architectural marvels in Delhi.

Qutab Minar
Built by Qutab-ud-din Aibak in 1199 AD, this 72.5 m high tower is located in the southernmost Delhi.


Red Fort
The extravagant Red Fort, known as Lal Qila, was built in red sandstone on the banks of river Yamuna by Shah Jahan in 1648.

Jama Masjid
Another marvel built by Shah Jahan is India's the largest mosque. It is faces Red Fort and overlooks the Mina Bazaar market.

Raj Ghat

It is the crematorium of Mahatma Gandhi. Just north of Raj Ghat is Shanti Vana where Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and her two sons, Rajiv and Sanjay, were cremated.

Old Fort (Purana Qila)
Old Fort was built by Sher Shah Suri in 1545 AD. It is believed to be Indraprastha, the original city of Delhi.

National Zoological Park
Located near Old Fort, this Zoo covers 214-acres and houses more than 2,000 animals of different species and is considered one of the finest and the biggest in South Asia.


Chandni Chowk
The most congested shopping place in the world , famous for textiles, electronic goods, fabrics, auto-accessories, watches and jewellery.

Jantar Mantar

In the heart of the city, this observatory commissioned by the King of Jaipur, completed in 1724, is where experiments were undertaken to track the movements of the stars and heavenly bodies.

Humayun's Tomb

It is a World Heritage site, built by Haji Begum in the mid 16th century and epitomises the architectural elements that would later be seen in the Taj.

India Gate
Located at the east end of Rajpath facing Rashtrapati Bhavan , it is a 42 m high gate structure, built in honour of soldiers died in Indo-Pak War of 1971.


Connaught Place
Designed by Robert Tor Russel and named after the Duke of Connaught, it is a be fashionable, elegant and spacious commercial centre of New Delhi spanning over 3.5 km.


National Museum

This is Delhi's largest museum and provides the best general overview of Indian culture and history. Packed with exhibits dating back 5,000 years, it takes several hours to get round the place.
